Volunteering with the Tennis Team

This year the Rhul Tennis Team have done several different charity/volunteering events throughout the year. A couple of the guys and girls volunteered their time... and body, for the RAG naked calendar. We also organized a tennis tournament within the University to raise money for a local charity, the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust.  This Tournament turned out to be a success as we raised over 100 pounds, although this might not be a huge sum, it is a start. Over the next couple years we want to work harder on our volunteering and charity work, this is why we have a new committee position, volunteering and social representative. The tennis team also invited kids from schools around the area to come and practice with some of the members of the team, the demand was very high which was exactly what we hoped for. Unfortunately, on the day of the "practice" the weather was against us and it had to be called off. However, due to the high demand we will certainly aim to do this more frequently throughout the year.

Try-outs for the 2013-2014 season

Tennis Trials

The tennis team trials will take place at the beginning of the first term. This will be the one and only chance for those who are interested to try-out ( Although there are exceptions). Players will be tested on all aspects of their tennis game in order to select the strongest team possible to represent Royal Holloway. At the trials all players should arrive at the court and give their contact details ( if they haven't already done so during the freshers sports fayre), this is mainly for the committee to keep you updated on all the latest happenings and news regarding tennis at Rhul.

Now getting to the tough part: Making the Cut!

Getting into any sports team at Rhul is tough as there is a lot of competition for a limited amount spots. So this is basically how the tennis try-outs will work:
  • All the players will be separated onto the four courts where the Captains and other committee members will feed balls to assess the participant’s groundstrokes and volleys. After a while, everyone will be called together and a certain number of people from each court (usually 4 or 5 people) will be chosen to stay behind and take part in the second stage of trials.

For those who unfortunately do not make the first cut, the committee will let you know all the options. We strongly advise those who do not make the first cut to not give up and still join the Tennis Club. As Tennis Club members you can sign-up for trainings with a professional coach or come during the tennis club court hours to have a hit with a member of the Rhul Tennis team.
The players that have made the first cut will then begin to rally and play points with either existing team players or against each other while the committee and the coach watch, assess and discuss amongst themselves who they think would be best suited for the team.
At the end of the day the committee and the coach will get together and choose the members of the Rhul Tennis team for the 2013/14 season. Again, for those that do not make it we would like to encourage you to still join the tennis club, as you will definitely improve throughout the year and this will of course increase your chances of making the team next year.

Just remember to relax, don't be nervous and play your best tennis! We, the Committee, are all very friendly and approachable people that know exactly how you feel as we have been in your shoes too.

Mens 2nd Team: 9 match unbeaten streak in the league leads to Promotion!

This season the team has bonded together remarkably well, excelling themselves and pushing the team to one of the highest levels it can reach for university sport. After making it through several rounds of the cup we were unfortunately knocked out, however we then made up for it in the league where we won every match with the exception of the starting match to the season. However from this first narrow loss the team learned what was needed of them and even got some insight into their future doubles pairings. Now due to the outstanding performances, the 2nd team are being promoted to the league above where they can hopefully compete at an even higher level of play.

Tennis Socials

We have a social every Wednesday night at the Armstrong Gun, this is an opportunity to hang out with your tennis friends, have a meal or a drink together and then head to the SU as a team. As most of our matches are also on Wednesdays this is also the time and place to find out how the teams did and hear about any news to do with the club. Attendance is by no means compulsory but obviously we'd like to see lots of you there! Feel free to bring any friends along, we are a very inclusive bunch :)

Team Training

Here at Royal Holloway, we train once a week on a Sunday for 1 hour with a professional coach. Most players often stay around after to have a friendly hit with each other. On Monday's and Fridays we have the courts booked for the tennis club to come and play, although there is not a coach this is always a great time to play a matches with another team member or to improve your skills with a friend.

Recreational Tennis at Rhul

We have recreational tennis sessions every Monday and Friday between 14.00 and 17.00. There will be some team members there at both sessions to organise some drills and matches and to give you tips on how to improve your game. Team members are encouraged to come along to these, especially the Friday session. This year we will organise a bit of a league that only recreational players can enter for those of you who want to play regular matches against each other. It will hopefully last for at least the first two terms (depending on how many people enter) and the winner will be announced at our end-of-year celebration. Matches will be held during the Monday and Friday court sessions, unless you organise a different time with your opponent. This will largely work on a trust basis, where you tell us the scores after the match so that we can enter them in the table. We will set up a separate facebook group for those entered in the league so that you know who you are playing against next.

President's Thoughts on a Great Year for the Club

The competitive season is over and everyone finally has a moment to stop, take a deep breath and let it all sink in. It is still hard to fathom what has happened to Tennis at Royal Holloway this year. If someone had told me a year ago about all that we would achieve this season, I would have called the paramedics or sent him back to the propaganda mills of North Korea. To say that our Club has seen a revival would be unappreciative of the great work done in previous years. Rather, it was as though someone had blown a veil off our eyes to show us what we could do, taken us by our collective shoulders, spun us round until we faced the right direction and then given us a good kick in the behind to get a move on. And boy, we sure did. But let’s start at the beginning.

Maybe it was the great summer of British sport, and especially British tennis (Murray won not only an Olympic gold medal but also the US Open), that inspired almost 300 current and new students to sign up to our mailing list during Welcome Week. Or maybe it was our fantastic promotional video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8VOUCDYROc) that sparked the interest. Either way, we doubled our paid membership this year to reach more than 60 Club members

We also had around 30-40 people showing up to each of our team trial sessions on the first weekend of term and the high standard of players was immediately apparent. For once, we could select teams that not only starred a few outstanding players, but that boasted high quality up to the very last player. To accommodate the rising number of good athletes, we fielded a Mixed Team in the London University Sports League (LUSL) alongside our traditional two Men’s Teams and one Ladies’ Team in the British University and College Sports (BUCS) leagues and cups. These teams, of course, went on to achieve mind-boggling success this year, fuelled both by valued old veterans and some fantastic fresh blood. All three BUCS teams won their leagues and are to be promoted next year, while both the Ladies’ and the Men’s first Teams won their respective BUCS cups! This breaks all of our previous personal records. The LUSL Mixed team also showed a solid performance in its first year, coming out in 4th position. Overall, the Club gained the most BUCS points out of all the sports at the university. We are immensely proud of all our competitive athletes and thank our Coach, Craig Thompson, for his brilliant work.

But a university sports club is not just about leagues and cups but also about making new friends and being a community. So we held a taster session for players more interested in recreational rather than competitive tennis, followed by our first evening Social: a BBQ at the Armstrong Gun, our partner pub. This first Social was the first of many evening gatherings (to replace the more applicable but less appropriate word ‘piss-up’) that occurred on most Wednesdays, often preceding a joint outing to dance until we dropped at the Student’s Union. Top socials this year included the Team Initiations, our Christmas Dinner, Initiations 2.0 and our joint Social with the Dance Society.

We also continued our work to provide opportunities for students to play tennis recreationally. Every Monday and Friday, we held recreational sessions during which the courts were open to all members to meet up and hit some balls. These were enriched by the offer, another first, of professional coaching for recreational players, both at beginner and intermediate level, by our Coach Craig. Because of the harsh winter, it was understandably difficult to encourage people to come out and play on the outdoor courts and hopefully we can catch up on some court time during the third term. We are also looking into alternative activities we can do recreationally as a Club when the weather does not allow us to play outside.

In addition to all this, we also organised some other superb events and trips, and my special thanks go out to the Committee for doing a great job on these, on top of all the fantastic work they do day to day. In November, we took about 15 members to see the ATP World Tour Finals in London and were privileged to watch tennis greats, including Federer, Murray, Djokovic, Tsonga and others. Some of our team players braved the cold to take some nude pictures on the courts in December for RAG’s Naked Calendar. To continue our list of firsts, in Term 2 we organised a charity tennis tournament over a weekend in aid of the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust. Despite the rainy and snowy weather we had up to 20 players, both competitive and recreational members as well as students who had not played with us before, compete for the trophies in singles and doubles and managed to raise more than £120 in the process. We also contacted local schools to offer 20 children the chance to come and play some tennis with us one afternoon but due to the elements we had to postpone the event until the third term.

To duly celebrate an outstanding two terms some of us attended the annual SU Colours Ball, a chance to dress up snazzy and party at a 5-star location, and brought home lots of awards to add to our silverware. Tatiana Zheleznyak won a Freshman of the Year award, Michael Pedersen and Robbie Cameron received their half colours, yours truly was humbled to be recognized with a Crest Award and, to top off the evening and a phenomenal season, the 1st Men’s Team were named the Team of the Year!

Towards the end of Term 2 we elected our Committee for the next year and a variety of exciting ideas were voiced, which make me confident that the next year will be even more memorable. Throughout exam term we will meet and exchange ideas and hand over the running of the Club to these new volunteers.

Phew, lots has happened already but I am looking forward to a fun third term, which will hopefully bring more forgiving weather. I encourage everyone to come out to the courts and shake off some stress during exam season. We shall also update you on our End-of-Year BBQ at the end of the year.

Good luck with exams!
